Grey Dawn – The Curse of Elderly Drivers

Posted by Busy Nothings on July 29, 2008

I’ve always heard tales of what horrible drivers women are, and what wreckless drivers teenagers are. I will admit that women may statistically have more fender benders than men, but once anyone reaches a certain age, they should have to pass a test to be allowed on the streets, especially the men, who seem to drive like a bat out of hell.

In the past few weeks, i’ve had more than my normal share of altercations with elderly male drivers. The Monday after Independence Day an elderly couple in an enormous Mitsubishi Montero behemoth pulled into the turning lane on College (71B) and decided they wanted in my lane, even though I was right next to them, in rush hour traffic, and couldn’t really move out of the way. In that instant I honked my horn profusely and narrowly escaped a major accident by mere inches because the Mercedes SUV to my right and just behind me, gave me room to swerve.

Today I was backing out of the city parking lot behind the station in order to go home for lunch. It’s a pretty narrow parking lot, my car’s not very small, and I had to large SUV’s to both of my sides, so I had to back up, turn the wheel, pull forward, and back up a second time to clear the parking spots. Well in between the my turning forward and final back up, an older man in a Scion box pulled out of his spot behind me and to the right all too fast, backing into my back bumper. I was at a full stop at this point, and it happened so quickly that I didn’t think to honk my horn. Out jumps the man wearing shorts that were all too short for a man his age, yelling at me.

Calmly, I said, “You backed into me sir. I was at a full stop and saw you back into me.”

He yelled, “Why didn’t you think to honk your horn!?”

That somewhat ruffled my feathers, but I remained calm. I replied, “I assumed you would look where you were backing up and see my car, as it’s not very small.”

He made some other comments, and I mentioned checking for damage. THEN he asked if I was injured, and I wasn’t. Neither vehicle was damaged. Those Toyota Camry bumpers that bounce really work. There wasn’t even a scratch. I sort of wished there had been some damage because the man had acted the way he had, and I’m just tired of elderly men who shouldn’t be driving.

I seriously believe that once a person is old enough to collect Social Security, they should have to pass a mandatory, yearly driving test. I imagine a vast amount of people would agree. Please comment if you do. If you have any stories to share, please do. For a laugh to calm your nerves after your rant, watch South Park’s, “Grey Dawn.”

“Kill Me”

Posted by Busy Nothings on April 1, 2008

Several days ago I checked The Daily Puppy to see if Lucy was chosen as the "Puppy of the Day."  That particular day I was shocked to find this dog below

was the POTD.  I feel sorry for the thing, but it honestly hurts me to look at it.  It's just a creepy dog and could probably win at least honorable mention for World's Ugliest Dog.  It just seems to cry out, "Kill Me."

That made me think of an episode of South Park where Stan was banished from town and went to live with a village of crazy PETA people.  One person was married to an ostrich, and their "child' begged for Stan to kill him.  That ugly, hybrid dog reminds me of that ugly, hybrid child on South Park.

The Seven TV Shows I Bother to Watch and Why

Posted by Busy Nothings on May 2, 2007

I posted a version of this earlier at one of my former blogs, but I thought I would post it again here. I think it’s important to air these thoughts, especially since How I Met Your Mother May be canceled. It shouldn’t be. It would be a crime against comedy. CBS would forever lose me as a viewer.

Enough about Ugly Betty! No more, “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World!” Please, no more CSI’s! Get out of the The Office! Earl has to die!

Brothers and Sisters
I am in love with this television show. I think that it has an all-star, sensational cast, and is great story-telling. Sally Field as Nora Walker alone is worth watching as she struggles with life after the death of her cheating, stealing husband.

I honestly don’t know why this show doesn’t get more great publicity. It is Must See TV in my house every week. Right now I can’t wait to know if Justin will have to go to Iraq, if the Walker siblings will meet their sister Rebecca, and so on. It’s intriguing.

How I Met Your Mother

This is my favorite show on tv these days since I don’t have a CW affiliate. It’s a show that I fell in love with during summer reruns. I’m now addicted and hope to get the first season on DVD. This is the only sitcom that I can make myself sit through. I love that Robin and Ted are together, and I’m dying to know who the mother is if it’s not Robin. I’m also thrilled that Lilly and Marshall are back together because they are the perfect, cutest couple on tv.

30 Rock
Since I work for an NBC affiliate, I made sure to watch the pilot episode of 30 Rock because I love the humor of Tina Fey. She has a sense of humor that I feel akin to. The pilot didn’t wow me, but thank TPTB for posting full episodes on NBC.com, because I have become addicted to this superb piece of comedy. Like How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock is a breath of fresh air. I always find something to laugh at, and it usually involves Liz Lemon’s love life. From the boyfriend who was on Dateline’s To Catch a Predator to the date who turned out to be a relative, this is just too funny.

South Park
Nothing is sacred and no one is safe, therefore I love this show. It’s current and it’s relevant. For anyone who gets a kick at how seriously people take things and general opinions of the public, you should definitely watch this satire.

Gilmore Girls
So I may not have been happy when Lorelai and Luke broke up, but I’m actually enjoying this season of GG more than I did last year. Yes, the show is a little different since the Palladinos left, but they sort of wrote the show into a nasty little corner. It’s been an interesting journey to see how Rosenthal has been digging it out. This is still my all-time favorite series. It’s the only one that I own all the DVD’s to.

Desperate Housewives
I have to admit that I tried to not be pulled in by all the hype the last couple of years, but I started really watching this show during the third season opener. Now my husband and I are addicted to it as well as Brothers and Sisters. The episode, Bang, was superb acting and storytelling. There’s just the right amount of drama and comedy to keep me interested.

The New Adventures of Old Christine
Back in the Seinfeld days, I always thought that Elaine was the funniest character. Maybe that’s because she was the lone girl in the cast, but I just loved her. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Christine is ten times funnier and more realistic than Elaine, and with Wanda Sykes as her best friend, I always remember to stay seated once How I Met Your Mother is over because this show deserves all the accolades that it has received. Both How I Met Your Mother and The New Adventures of Old Christine are far better and funnier than Two and a Half Men. That show is too raunchy these days. I don’t even know what airs after Two and a Half Men. They’ve lost me by then.
